in 2017, a good friend and I spent four days in Knoydart enjoying the remote tranquillity and wilderness that the peninsula offers. After sampling the whiskies and fine sea food in the only pub, we slowly hauled heavy packs up Ladhar Bheinn for a couple of nights on the munro.
The morning of our ascent was fine following days of heavy rain. We baked in the relative warmth following the committing route up to the mountain’s summit. As is the way in Scotland, the weather decided to mix things up a little and as we closed in on 1019m, clag rolled in an reduced visibility down to mere metres.
A bad foot placement on the steep descent led to me tumbling 30ft down through the clitter and dislocating my shoulder. We tried to relocate it ourselves but to no avail and were forced to call Lochaber Mountain Rescue for help. A short trip in the Inverness SAR helicopter dropped me off at The Belford Hospital in Fort William where it eventually found its way back in.
