The little town of Watchet is tucked into the Somerset coast near Minehead and has been a thriving settlement since the Saxon times. It’s the past 100+ years that are really interesting however. Once an integral link in shipping iron ore mined in the surrounding hills to South Wales, it was later home to the UK’s largest paper mill which closed in 2015 and has since been mostly demolished. Only the West Somerset Railway serves as an intact reminder of time gone by.
The underlying industrial fabric has mostly been swept aside in place for holiday going tourism. Thankfully, the town is peppered with interpretation boards to ensure the heritage is not forgotten.
